Advocacy > Stop Bullying Now!

A Letter from Niagara Region PTA Region Director MaryBeth Carroll

Niagara Region PTA has begun a year -long initiative to "Stop Bullying Now". We feel strongly that bullying is not OK and action to bring about societal change needs to be taken. With everyone working together, we can make a difference!

Sadly enough, we all have been made aware of the tragedies that have come to light due to bullying. It's "always been around", unjustly accepted and something that even adults are guilty of. Until just recently, NYS was one of the few states without anti-bullying legislation. In the fall of 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) was signed into law. This will help ensure that schools have the tools and resources in place to afford all students - and particularly those who are targeted by bullies - an educational environment in which they can learn.

Our main goal is to educate adults and children alike of the hurtful behaviors that cause so much emotional damage. With the viewpoint that such behaviors are not acceptable and with everyone working together, we all can make a difference! To accomplish all of this, we need to be active
on all fronts: in schools, in homes, on playgrounds and in decision-making rooms. If we all work to "Stop Bullying Now!" we can really help change the lives of so many who live in pain and fear.

Because it matters,
